Schumaker Briefing 8 Bioregional solutions: for living on one planet

Abstract

The bioregional approach thinks globally and acts locally. From this arose the UK's largest eco-village: Bedzed (Beddington Zero Energy Development). The development looks out for the planet and also aims for better relationships between people. Central to Bedzed is the notion of Ecological Footprinting or FEET Index, (Foreign Exchange Earned per Tonne of Transport CO2) whose aim is to minimise the environmental damage of long-distance trade. New technologies incorporated into the scheme include a small-scale waste wood-fired power plant, a paper production and recycling scheme and a way of developing textiles from hemp.
