Abstract

Wall to wall carpet suggests luxury, comfort and warmth, but the appeal diminishes when we look a little closer. Carpets harbour dust which leads to a build up of dust mites and dust mite allergen. They may also contain chemical residues from their manufacture or treatment. Carpets act as sinks for pollutants and toxins and all these things can trigger allergic reactions. Babies and young children exposed to such allergens can become sensitised to them and develop asthma and allergies in later life.
