Abstract

Evaluates the design of two A and E departments, one an exemplar plan developed as a guide for trusts undertaking new build schemes. Based on research carried out by Intelligent Space Partnership. The two departments were evaluated using key performance indices gathered from existing A and E departments. The locations assessed are circulation, arrival and entrances, reception and waiting areas, triage and assessment rooms, and treatment rooms. Comparison with observed use patterns in two of the existing A and E departments - Hull Royal Infirmary and Kettering - provided information on the occupancy and capacity issues both of the proposed departments may experience.
