Abstract

Trees play an essential role in the environment and visual amenity of both rural and urban landscapes. Modern society expects a multiplicity of services (electricity, gas, water, sewage, telecommunications, cable television) each of which requires an extensive distribution network, both above and below ground. These guidelines are applicable to all services (underground and overhead) and to trees in any location (public or private, rural or urban). They should be considered when new services are to be constructed adjacent to existing trees and vice versa. The principles set out in these guidelines also have relevance in respect of work carried out to highways near trees (e.g. kerbing, footway reinstatement).
