Abstract

In contrast with traditional waterproofing materials, the polymeric single ply class of synthetics exhibit a high level of chemical inertness. This ensures greater water resistance, durability, etc, which have made significantly improved performance possible. The choice of alternative synthetic materials is wide and although all are used in a single ply, the systems employed for jointing, bonding and fixing, which transform the material into comprehensive waterproofing for a roofing structure, are varied. The systems are influenced by the nature of the material, the demands of the roof structure and the design preference of the architect. Over the last twenty years, both the materials and systems have become refined and the manufacturers are aware of the importance of ensuring the compatibility of both their materials and systems with the design produced by the Architect or Civil Engineer. To facilitate this desirable collaboration, and to provide a context in which polymeric membrane and fixing manufacturers operate, this guide on Design Criteria has been devised.
