Abstract

Provides guidance on increasing the amount of recycling and use of alternative materials in transport infrastructure renewal works. The barriers that inhibit the use of recycling and alternative materials are identified and discussed, and examples of how to overcome them are given. Many of these barriers are non-technical and relate to the perception of new materials and techniques, but some deeper-seated issues are identified. Actions required to overcome these barriers are presented. Transport infrastructure includes the earthworks, drainage and pavements required for the functioning of roads, railways, airports and canals. Structures such as bridges are not dealt with in this document. The report principally covers renewal works for transport infrastructure, but many aspects are also relevant for new construction.
