Desktop product retirement

As more of our customers have moved over to NBS Chorus, support and access for our desktop products is ending.

product-retirement-legacy

The construction industry is rapidly becoming more digitised, and so too are the tools needed to work safely and effectively. This digitisation has accelerated in the last year as the industry has adapted to working remotely during the pandemic.

After careful consultation with our customers, we have decided that now is the right time to retire NBS Create, Building, Landscape, Scheduler, Domestic and Binders and Discs and support all our customer to move to NBS Chorus.

This page includes information about the retirement for each our legacy products.

Why now?

We’ve seen the adoption of NBS Chorus grow rapidly in the last year, with a 600% increase in usage, and thousands of specifiers moving over from NBS Building, Scheduler, Create, Landscape and Binders and Discs. NBS Chorus is now our most used platform, and this tells us that the time is right to start the retirement of these older products, which can no longer support the needs of the industry.

Technology has also moved on significantly in the last few years, and with our desktop products approaching the end of their natural life, we want to make sure all our customers benefit from the latest developments and security measures.

Product retirement status

NBS Create has now retired. You will then only be able to access your projects in read-only mode within the product.

NBS Building and Landscape have now retired. You will then only be able to view your existing projects through the read-only viewer.

NBS Binder and Discs has now retired for all customers. All content and future updates are available in Chorus.

NBS Scheduler will retire on 30 November 2021. After this date, support and access to the platform will end. We recommend that, if you haven’t already, you start using Chorus for new projects straight away.

NBS Domestic will retire in December 2021. Any customer who purchased by June 2021 will have access to the Domestic website to complete and publish projects until December 2021. After December 2021, Domestic website and support will no longer be available. We recommend that all customers get in touch via sales@thenbs.com to discuss the best alternative subscription to suit your needs.

When working on basic construction projects, where the work is of a simple nature, then typically this work will be undertaken using a ‘small works’ standard form construction contract. Generally speaking, contracts for small works do not support the use of bills of quantities as pricing documents because the extra cost of preparation is not usually justified when the level of detail is not required.

J Foster Architects is a London-based practice founded by Jeremy Foster, that predominantly delivers small residential projects such as conversions, extensions and renovations. The practice has used the NBS Building software for many years but has recently migrated to NBS Chorus Small Works. Dr Stephen Hamil, NBS Innovation Director, caught up with Jeremy to find out more about his NBS Chorus experience.

All of the codes against the clauses have changed once I have imported the specification from Create into Chorus

The ability to retain the classification codes used in NBS Create is in a feature that will be released early June. This will allow for either (a) a translation of Create codes to Uniclass 2015 codes or (b) the retention of the original coding. A preview of this can be viewed in the article below:

My revision information is now missing after importing my specification into Chorus

The revision history does not import into NBS Chorus. It is suggested that prior to making any modifications to the specification in Chorus that you make a Publication History entry within Chorus. From this point, revisions to the specifications can be indicated within future publications:

Our client will not allow us to use cloud software

We test our platform against the Google VSAQ (Vendor Security Assessment Questionnaire) – the process that Google uses to assess vendor security to ensure the highest levels of compliance. NBS has achieved Cyber Essentials accreditation. This is a UK government certification scheme with standards designed to protect businesses from cyber-attacks. Following the standards of this certification means that NBS is practising preventative cyber hygiene like having firewalls enabled and using multi-factor authentication. Some of the clauses have incorrect formatting once imported from Building into Chorus
The 00 and 05 prelims and whole building clauses from my Create specification are not importing

Due to the technical complexities of the migration of the 00 and 05 sectional content from NBS Create to Uniclass 2015, it is not possible to import these sections into NBS Chorus. This content must be recreated in the Chorus platform. A workaround would be to export these sections from NBS Create to Microsoft Word to deal with any final specification writing work where required.

The specifiers in our office require access to our office guidance

The organization notes feature in Chorus is under development. A demonstration of this can be provided on request.
