About NBS Newsroom Partners

Our desktop products are retiring

As more of our customers have moved over to NBS Chorus, support for our desktop products will be withdrawn over the coming months. Here's all you need to know.

product-retirement-legacy

The construction industry is rapidly becoming more digitised, and so too are the tools needed to work safely and effectively. This digitisation has accelerated in recent months as the industry has adapted to working remotely during the pandemic.

After careful consultation with our customers we’ve taken the decision that now is the right time to begin the process of retiring NBS Create, Building,  Landscape and Binders and Discs, and to support all our specifiers in moving to NBS Chorus.

We’ll be helping you at every step of the way through a phased approach to retirement, giving you the time you need to plan, and making sure you quickly see the benefits of cloud specification with NBS Chorus.

This page contains everything you need to know about the transition, how it benefits you and what happens next.

Why now?

We’ve seen the adoption of NBS Chorus grow rapidly this year, with a 75% increase in usage, and thousands of specifiers moving over from NBS Building, Create, Landscape and Binders and Discs. NBS Chorus is now our most used platform, and this tells us that the time is right to start the retirement of these older products, which can no longer support the needs of the industry.

Technology has also moved on significantly in the last few years, and with our desktop products approaching the end of their natural life, we want to make sure all our customers benefit from the latest developments and security measures.

How this helps you:

We believe NBS Chorus is the future and will help you specify faster, more effectively and more efficiently. It includes all of the content from NBS Create, Building and Landscape, along with an innovative set of features designed to make specification writing easier.

Here are a few of the benefits that customers moving to Chorus have seen:

How will the retirement work?

Our aim is to make your move to Chorus as easy and straightforward as possible, via a fully managed process and tools to help import your existing projects. As an existing NBS customer, you already have access to NBS Chorus as part of your subscription, and if you haven't already, you can get started straight away. You can log into NBS Chorus here and enter your NBS ID and password to log in. If you don’t have an NBS ID, you can set one up here.

As always, a complete range of support and training options are available to help you begin.

You can already import specifications directly from NBS Create into Chorus, and soon this will be extended to include importing from NBS Building and Landscape.

You will still have access to your existing products until the end of June 2021, but we recommend that if you haven't already, that you start using Chorus for new projects straight away. Content updates to Create, Building and Landscape will cease later in 2020.

Key dates for you to be aware of are shown below.*

When working on basic construction projects, where the work is of a simple nature, then typically this work will be undertaken using a ‘small works’ standard form construction contract. Generally speaking, contracts for small works do not support the use of bills of quantities as pricing documents because the extra cost of preparation is not usually justified when the level of detail is not required.

J Foster Architects is a London-based practice founded by Jeremy Foster, that predominantly delivers small residential projects such as conversions, extensions and renovations. The practice has used the NBS Building software for many years but has recently migrated to NBS Chorus Small Works. Dr Stephen Hamil, NBS Innovation Director, caught up with Jeremy to find out more about his NBS Chorus experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started with NBS Chorus – I know I have access but don’t know where to start?
How do I access NBS Chorus?

You can log into NBS Chorus here and enter your NBS ID and password to log in. If you don’t have an NBS ID, you can set one up here

Will I be able to still access my old Building, Landscape or Create specification once support ends?

You can import specifications from NBS Create now. You will be able to import NBS Building or Landscape specifications into Chorus from Q4, 2020. The support for our desktop products will end on 30 June 2021. After this date, you will still be able to view your old specification files via a read-only viewer. We’ll share instructions about how to access the viewer soon. For more information about importing specifications from NBS Create, contact our support team via the Help Centre.

Will I still be able to use my desktop product(s) after January 2021?

You will be able to access the product(s) but the final content updates will be made in November and December 2020. If you continue to use the products after this date, there is more risk that the content in your specification will be out-of-date. We recommend that you start using NBS Chorus for new projects as soon as possible.

What is happening to NBS Scheduler, NBS Contract Administrator and NBS Domestic?

Existing NBS Scheduler customers have been given access to NBS Chorus Small Works as part of their existing subscription. Research is currently underway to help us understand the future of NBS Scheduler but for now we will continue to update and support the product for the foreseeable future.

There is no change for NBS Domestic and NBS Contract Administrator. We are still continuing to sell, support and update the products at this time.

What is happening to Binders and Discs?

The construction industry is moving away from traditional print and towards digital tools to receive content and to produce specifications.  Customers are telling us that now is the right time to stop providing updates to our Binders and Discs service. To support this, all NBS Scheduler/Binders & Discs customers now have access to Chorus as part of their existing subscription and they will receive all future content updates through the platform. All of the support and training material included on this page is suitable for Binders and Discs customers.
