Since NBS announced the acquisition of Digicon in 2017 we have been working together and in 2018 launched the NBS National BIM Library and BIM Object Standard into the Canadian marketplace. Our president of NBS Canada (Digicon), David Watson, is leading the way from our office in Alberta. Here David tells us a little more about himself and Digicon.
David began his career in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry. He worked for a sheet metal firm as estimator, acquired field experience as an air and water balancing contractor, and in sales working for a few major ventilation equipment suppliers. He is a self-taught programmer and began creating advanced specifications tools in the late 1980s for his father, Wayne Watson, an independent specification consultant.
Digicon emerged in 1996 when Wayne and David combined their talents as a father and son team. Wayne was the construction technology expert, with David providing sales and software expertise. Over the next 21 years, Digicon offered specifications, software and services to the construction industry in Canada and the USA. Wayne retired in 2011 and David operated Digicon until being acquired by NBS in 2017. Both Wayne and David are fellows of the Construction Specifications Canada. David continues to serve as Digicon’s president.
Heavily involved in the establishment of international standards (ISO and buildingSMART) in the field of BIM standards, David is currently the chairman of the Canadian mirror committee for ISO TC59/SC13, and participates in international technical summits on behalf of buildingSMART Canada. Nationally, he actively participates in buildingSMART Canada and CanBIM to bring awareness about the impact of BIM on specifications – helping to bring specifications requirements to BIM experts, and BIM technology to specifiers.
I’ve always searched for technological solutions to an age-old problem; improving the quality of specifications, and linking them to architectural drawings.
“The NBS National BIM Library offers quality, trusted BIM objects, authored to the NBS BIM Object Standard. It links complex 3D geometry with key technical product information to create high quality BIM objects that can be used to support smart decision making and reducing risk on projects. I’m excited to bring both of these products to the Canadian market, enabling our built community to deliver outstanding projects in an informed, collaborative and efficient way”.
Outside of work, David’s passion is aviation. He and his brother perform a formation aerobatic act in their ex-RCAF Harvard aircraft at air shows around northwest Canada and USA during the summer months, as the “Yellow Thunder” team.
