The team at JDDK are adamant that clients shouldn't have to understand BIM to reap the rewards and work hard to deliver timely, accurate co-ordinated information when working on a project. In developing their BIM approach the practice have made good use of Office Masters to ensure key information is captured early and then tailored to meet the needs of particular projects. It's clear that for JDDK staff it's not just about the software - they've examined their business processes and developed these, over the last six years, as BIM awareness and maturity in-house and across and the supply chain has evolved.
Client expectations are rising. The team at FaulknerBrowns need to deliver more information, more quickly, but to the same exacting standards. In developing their BIM approach the firm have worked hard to ensure their exacting attention to detail is retained.
BIM has front-loaded information requirements on projects but the team have relished the challenge, seeing the information as something that would be necessary anyway and will help deliver better buildings. Each project represents a new opportunity to work on a new aspect of the 'BIM jigsaw'. A recent project for NS&I on the banks of the River Wear - Freeman's Reach - brought together a range of BIM information across the supply chain.
The team have used NBS Building to deliver high-quality specifications in the past and in recent years have begun transitioning to NBS Create. They took time to share their experiences of understanding where this new software tool fits in their digital workflow.
Often one key project is all it takes for the thinking, process engineering and technology to come together and really get results. Ryder cite their work on Manchester Central Library back in 2009 as being instrumental. Here the client really engaged with the opportunity afforded by a whole range of BIM benefits and what this would mean at design, build and crucially, in use, through a robust operational model for facilities management.
Today the team use Autodesk Revit, coupled with NBS Create to hone a highly-effective digital workflow.
For a project team, working on a single model and a host of linked data, brings a multitude of efficiencies that, ultimately, deliver better results for clients. For the team working on the overhaul of Glasgow's Queen Street station the links between Autodesk Revit and NBS Create simplified the process of generating the project specification and identifying updates that were required as the design developed, and mitigated risks associated with the traditional disconnect between generation of drawings and production of specification documents.
